The question
As brain progenitor cells lose activity with age, how much is driven by the cell itself, and how much by its surroundings?
The experiment the material enabled
Cambridge researchers developed hydrogels that separated stiffness from matrix composition. This allowed them to test physical conditions independently in rodent oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, or OPCs.
What changed
Aged OPCs regained proliferation and differentiation activity on softer substrates. Young OPCs lost activity on stiffer ones. The study also identified PIEZO1 as a mediator of this mechanical response.
Why it matters for research
Substrate mechanics can be an experimental variable, alongside biochemical conditions. Controlling it helped reveal a response that age alone could not explain.
